Deacon Retreat Deacons Eva Long and Holly Nichols attended the annual Pastor/Deacon Retreat at the Eagle Eyrie Conference Center in Lynchburg, VA on May 7-8. Speakers at the conference included an Army chaplain, a Navy chaplain, and the police chaplain from Blacksburg, VA who helped minister to officers and students after the shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007.
Eva and Holly met Baptists from all over the state, including three
wonderful people from the other North Fork Baptist Church in Blacksburg. They attended several conferences and learned what other small churches are doing during these difficult economic times.
One highlight of the trip was assisting with a group called Stop Hunger Now. Along with 400 others, Eva and Holly put on hair nets and, in 2 1/2 hours, helped assemble 61,000 meals for the hungry. As the work progressed, a gong would sound whenever 5,000 more meals were assembled. It was a wonderful and heartwarming experience! Click here to view some pictures of the trip.
